GDC Meeting #4

Graphic Design Club
Meeting #4
1-27-2012
5:00pm – 6:30pm
Main Points:

1.    Discussed going to art shows/ museums/ special events
·      Visit a printing press and see the process
·      Going to certain AIGA events
·      Going to the Addy’s Awards (Ann Arbor Ad Club awards for graphic designers) on Thursday Feb. 9th  http://www.a2ac.org/v1/Addys
·      Dinser’s show on Feb. 10th
·      Toledo King James Museum
·      AIGA John Cantino workshop/talk
·      Signal Return (non-profit press shop)
These would all be great opportunities to network and learn more about the graphic design field.

2.    Discussed ways of raising money/promoting the club to gain members
·      Peer-portfolio review
a.     Book the critique room and charge anywhere around $10 at the door for the pluses and minuses of other student’s work
b.    Set up a system that would be used for critiquing work (using forms to explain things better in words and so that it’s written down in order to remember what’s been said)
c.     Have snacks and refreshments set up for students coming in
d.    Keep it “low-key” so that people don’t feel hesitant or uncomfortable about presenting their work/ work-in-progress. This will hopefully attract more people.
e.    Does not need to be a FULL portfolio, but can be select pieces, finished or unfinished.
f.      Involving more faculty members for critiques
·      Bake sale
a.     We did well with this last time so this would definitely have potential to happen again
·      Sending out a faculty email to announce the club to other classes
·      Setting up a screen-printing area to do screen-prints for students

Hey! Make sure to check the facebook group for an updated event for Feb. 10th and the meeting time for that day will be changed from the normal time to 6:30-7:30 in preparations for the event.

GDC Meeting #3

Graphic Design Club
Meeting #3
11-18-2011
5:00pm – 6:15pm
Main Points:

1.    Discussed other options in order to make money for the club because holiday cards wouldn’t make much profit.
·      T-shirt designs (minimal color usage would be best)
·      Consider appropriate placement of your design on the shirt and recognize “trends” that would sell. For example: designs that reach from the back of a t-shirt to the front.
·      Consider sizes of t-shirts and those who may have to special order a size that isn’t available.
·      Keep prices in mind and what would realistically sell to people. ($10-$25)

2.    Discussed concerns for the bake sale.
·      It would be best not to claim that anything that is made is gluten or allergen free because the club does not want to be responsible for any issues that could arise if one of these allergens were accidentally added.

3.    Talked about the identity of the club
·      As a group, used a collective group of words to describe the club.
·      Start sketching logos for the club. This is a website of a helpful website for inspiration: www.logopond.com. Logos will be discussed further during the next meeting.

Miscellaneous fun things:
Thanks to Gino for bringing in snacks for everyone!

This is the mind map that was put together during the meeting.
